13 things ridiculously successful people do every day

13 things ridiculously successful people do every day13 things ridiculously successful people do every dayHaving close access to ultra-successful people can yield some pretty incredible information about who they really are, what makes them tick, and, most importantly, what makes them so successful and productive.Whenever you see a successful person, you only see the public glories, never the private sacrifices to reach them. Vaibhav ShahKevin Kruse is one such person. He recently interviewed over 200 ultra-successful people, including 7billionaires, 13 Olympians, and a host of accomplished entrepreneurs. One of his most revealing sources of information came from their answers to a simple open-ended questionWhat is your number one secret to productivity? In analyzing their responses, Kruse coded the answers to yield some fascinating suggestions. What follows are some of my favorites from Kevins findings.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happines s, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraThey focus on minutes, not hours. Most people default to hour and half-hour blocks on their calendar highly successful people know that there are 1,440 minutes in every day and that there is nothing mora valuable than time. Money can be lost and made again, but time spent can never be reclaimed. As legendary Olympic gymnast Shannon Miller told Kevin, To this day, I keep a schedule that is almostminute by minute. You must master your minutes to master your life. They focus on only one thing.Ultra-productive people know what their Most Important Task is and work on it for one to two hours each morning, without interruptions. What task will have the biggest impact on reaching your goals? What accomplishment will get you promoted at work? Thats what you should dedicate your mornings to every day. They dont use to-do lists.Throw away your to-do list instead schedule everything on your calendar. It turns out that only 41% of items on to -do lists ever get done. All those undone items lead to stress and insomnia because of the Zeigarnik effect, which, in essence, means that uncompleted tasks will stay on your mind until you finish them. Highly productive people put everything on their calendar and then work and live by that calendar. They beat procrastination with time travel.Your future self cant be trusted. Thats because we aretime inconsistent. We buy veggies today because we think well eat healthy salads all week then we throw out green rotting mush in the future. Successful people figure out what they can donowto make certain their future selves will do the right thing. Anticipate how you will self-sabotage in the future, and come up with a solution today to defeat your future self. They make it home for dinner.Kevin first learned this one from Intels Andy Grove, who said, There is always more to be done, more that should be done, always more than can be done. Highly successful people know what they value in life . Yes, work, but also whatelsethey value. There is no right answer, but for many, these other values include family time, exercise, and giving back. They consciously allocate their 1,440 minutes a day to each area they value (i.e., they put them on their calendar), and then they stick to that schedule. They use a notebook.Richard Branson has said on more than one occasion that he wouldnt have been able to build Virgin without a simple notebook, which he takes with him wherever he goes. In one interview, Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis said, Always carry a notebook. Write everything down. . .. That is a million dollar lesson they dont teach you in business school Ultra-productive people free their minds by writingeverythingdown as the thoughts come to them. They process e-mails only a few times a day.Ultra-productive people dont check their e-mail throughout the day. They dont respond to each vibration or ding to see who has intruded into their inbox. Instead, like everything else, theyscheduletime to process their e-mails quickly and efficiently. For some, thats only once a day for others, its morning, noon, and night. They avoid meetings at all costs. When Kevin asked Mark Cuban to give his best productivity advice, he quickly responded, Never take meetings unless someone is writing a check. Meetings are notorious time killers. They start late, have the wrong people in them, meander around their topics, and run long. You should get out of meetings whenever you can and hold fewer of them yourself. If youdorun a meeting, keep it short and to the point. They say no to almost everything.Billionaire Warren Buffet once said, The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say no to almost everything. And James Altucher colorfully gave Kevin this tip If something is not a Hell Yeah then its a no. Remember, you only have 1,440 minutes in a day. Dont give them away easily. They follow the 80/20 rule.Known as the Pa reto Principle, in most cases, 80% of results come from only 20% of activities. Ultra-productive people know which activities drive the greatest results. Focus on those and ignore the rest. They delegate almost everything.Ultra-productive people dont ask, How can I do this task? Instead, they ask, How can this task get done? They take theIout of it as much as possible. Ultra-productive people dont have control issues, and they are not micro-managers. In many cases, good enough is, well, good enough. They tick things only once. How many times have you opened a piece of regular mail- a bill perhaps- and then put it down, only to deal with it again later? How often do you read an e-mail and then close it and leave it in your inbox to deal with later? Highly successful people try to touch it once. If it takes less than five or ten minutes- whatever it is- they deal with it right then and there. It reduces stress since it wont be in the back of their minds, and it is more efficient, since t hey wont have to re-read or re-evaluate the item again in the future. They practice a consistent morning routine.Kevins single greatest surprise while interviewing over 200 highly successful people was how many of them wanted to share their morning ritual with him. While he heard about a wide variety of habits, most nurtured their bodies in the morning with water, a healthy breakfast, and light exercise, and they nurtured their minds with meditation or prayer, inspirational reading, or journaling.Bringing It All TogetherYou might not be an entrepreneur, an Olympian, or a billionaire (or even want to be), but their secrets just might help you to get more done in less time and assist you to stop feeling so overworked and overwhelmed. What do you do to stay productive? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.Special thanks toKevin Krusefor assistance with this post. This article first appeared on Linkedin. Where are the jobs in Westchester, NY

Where are the jobs in Westchester, NYWhere are the jobs in Westchester, NYWhere are the jobs in Westchester County, New York? Thats a good question one David Newman and Robert A. Rosmarin are trying to answer for themselves and fellow residents of one of New York Citys wealthiest suburban tracts.Newman, Rosmarin and four other unemployed area residents are blogging their job search as part of LoHud.coms coverage of the Jobless Recovery. Over the next 12 weeks, reporters for LoHud, the Website of the Journal News, are also filing stories and data on employment conditions of the regions industries and profiles of successful job seekers and those still waiting to find success. The posts from the bloggers are a window into the agony many experience while unemployed.Rosmarin, of New Rochelle, worked nearly 20 years on Wall Street before he was laid off from his job as an Assistant Vice President at AllianceBernstein in 2009. He said he felt hurt and cheated by the situation he finds himse lf in.Unemployment is like a divorce and the best you can do is hope for a good settlement, said Newman, of Nyack, a lawyer who specializes in trade law and has also been unemployed since 2009.Rosmarin and Newman offer mora than just despair. There are glimmers of hope, like the satisfaction they found in the success of colleagues and the anticipation that the connections or karma might lead to their own good fortune. They also share their job search tactics, like Rosmarins decision to take a temporary position last year and Newmans attempts to network with friends and former colleagues. Their tactics are a lesson in successful and unsuccessful job search approaches. At Ladders and on Career-Line, weve treated job-seeker profiles like those featured on LoHud and in the Journal News, as a way to humanize the story of unemployment and to offer instruction to the audience. Like Newman and Rosmarin, everyones tale is unique and complex, full of details specific to them and their career. B ut every job search is framed by what we call parameters the boundaries that limit the job seekers search. Do you need to find a job in the same industry or city? Do you need to leave the area? Do you have three teenage children who need an afternoon chauffeur or do you need to deal with the fact that you didnt finish college?By reading the personal stories of Newman, Rosmarin and others, you can identify where your parameters align with the subjects. You can judge how their decisions might impact your job search and you can apply the lessons of their job search to your own. You can follow their lead or avoid their mistakes.Use stories like these as lessons in job search tactics.

Job Fair Yields Cold Truths about Resumes

Job Fair Yields Cold Truths about ResumesCold Truths about ResumesJob Fair Yields Cold Truths about ResumesIf you happened to catch Good Morning America on Wednesday, you know that hundreds of job seekers braved the bone-chilling cold of a pre-dawn New England winter morning to attend GMAs Great American Job Fair and Career Camp in Boston. The event paired recruiters from a melange of Fortune 500 companies, medium-sized businesses, non-profit organizations, and government agencies with men and women looking for work in a wide range of disciplines.I wasinvited to critique resumes at the job fair. For more than four hours, I came face to face with some of the pain caused by todays recession, as I consulted with a steady stream of job seekers concerned about the health of their resumes. After seeing dozens of resumes in that short space of time, here are three lessons I came away withAlways Have a Professional Summary or Objective at the Top of Your Resume. Some of the resumes I reviewed didnt have either a few that did were vague. If youre unemployed, I cant overstress how important this is To land a new job, you need to be as specific as possible with your summary or objective. Know what you want and be very aware of the value you bring to an employer. As I advised those whose resumes I critiqued Write a personal mission statement or 30-second elevator pitch. Once youve got it nailed down, edit it to about half its length and use it as a boilerplate summary or objective. Then, adjust the wording to fit each job you apply for.Volunteer Experience Counts. This came as a revelation to a handful of the people I met. If youre looking for a different line of work, maybe in a different industry, think about anything youve done as a volunteer in your community, for a charity, or with a professional group or association. For instance, if you would like a sales position, but have little to no work experience in sales, it can make a difference if you did fundraising as a vo lunteer. How much you did or did not get paid is irrelevant if you have the skills.Accomplishments over Duties. There were many resumes that listed the job seekers duties rather than what they accomplished or how they made a difference in their previous roles. If you generated more revenue for an employer, saved money, or made a process more efficient, say so, with numbers (e.g., Generated $4 million in new revenue by recruiting 10 new clients.) and list them above your duties and responsibilities. Other improvements might include streamlining an awkward process, improving customer satisfaction, reducing accidents, or any other result that helped the business.Jobs are hard to come by in a recession. So, look for any way you can gain an edge over other candidates. Your resume is first and foremost a marketing document and you are the product. Make it easy to for employers to see that you are the product they need. With the added competition a recession generates, thats a cold, hard truth for an equally cold winter day.

3 Things To Give Up For A Successful Job Search (Pt 2)

3 Things To Give Up For A Successful Job Search (Pt 2)3 Things To Give Up For A Successful Job Search (Pt 2)At its core, job search is about habits good habits move your search forward in a fruitful fashion obsolete habits that you used the last time you had to look for a job can make your search slow and painful this time around. While you dont have to totally commit to, out with the old, and in with the new, its important to recognize that the strategies you used to get you to your last professional goal may notlage be all the same strategies to get you to your next level.Earlier in this series, we talked about the need to give up compartmentalizing your search, seeking someone elses permission, and ignoring your imagination for your future. Today, lets go over 3 more things to give up in order to have a successful job search.Give up the distractions.I know it doesnt seem like it would be distracting quite the opposite it seems like youre engaged in good activity. However, give u p all the job alerts you have automatically sent to you from the job boards. They dont match what you want, and 1,000 people applied for any single opening before you got the alert.More importantly, I want to recommend a mindset shift. When you set up those alerts, receive them in your inbox every day, and take the time to go through them and apply, all of that feels like activity. But I want you to stop and ask yourself this Where is the productivity? Those are 2 different things. How many phone or in-person interviews have you gotten from doing this? Im going to go out on a limb and bet you that its zero, one, or in the single digits.Distractions. Spending time on the automated job alerts every day constitutes a distraction from much more effective job search methods that take you further, faster. Replace the old habit with the practice of identifying an organization youd like to work for, identifying the relevant decision makers, and reaching out to them directly.Give up trying t o have it all.No, I cannot make your resume work for the experiential marketing roles youre thinking about, plus do double-duty in case you come across an opening for a senior operations position. And, beyond the absolute maximum of 2 versions of your resume, no, you cant have any more. Just stop.I understand your particular set of skills and expertise may apply to more than 1 type of role. 2 types of roles is fine. 6 is not. Focus will fix your job search every time. If you cant say the key thing you can come into the employers organization to do, why do you hold the expectation that hell look at your list of 25 areas of expertise and magically figure it out?Lets not have your message be messy. Your primary message needs to succinctly, clearly articulate who you are, what you do, and the value you bring. That message is the core of your story. Its your call for the employer to take the action you most desire for him to inbox or call you regarding an opening that matches.Give up bei ng, as opposed to doing.Im going to need for your resume to not resemble the following remark Self-starter, motivated and productive with an effective combination of directing multiple priorities and generating innovative strategies to meet and exceed performance objectives.Say what, now?The first 5 words are adjectives. You can say any adjective about yourself that you want they dont mean anything. However, what does mean something and what the employer is going to write you a check for every 2 weeks is not who you can be, but what you can do.Get to the point pronto. Replace the fluff with substance. For example, Senior loan officer who consistently drives double-digit monthly revenue growth, and provides leadership to sales teams in order to raise business performance. Thats a statement about what you actually DO.The distractions, trying to be all things to all people, and hoping to lift yourself up with the self-congratulatory stuff are all old job search habits that are out of touch with what competitive employers are looking for today. If youre serious about breaking out of the old job search habits, and finding out what really works, join us for 5 Secret Job Search Hacks For The Age 50+ Job-Hunter Youll see immediately how to make your LinkedIn profile the one that recruiters will find (translation they come to you not just you constantly put your resume out there.) Tips on Interviewing Prospective Employees

Tips on bewerberinterviewing Prospective EmployeesTips on Interviewing Prospective EmployeesWant job interview tips to help you select the most qualified employees? These tips will help you assess the skills, experience, and cultural fit of your potential employees. The job interview is a powerful factor in the employee selection process in most organizations. While it may notlage deserve all of the attention that it receives, the interview is mucksmuschenstill extremely important. Background checking and checking references are also key factors in your hiring decisions. Hopefully, you have added these checks of factual information to your hiring arsenal. Recent trends are moving toward favoring test scores and otzu sich impartial means of assessment in employee selection, but most companies still rely on a good, old-fashioned job interview. The job interview remains your key tool in assessing the candidates cultural fit. It is also the tool you can use to get to know your candidates on a more personal basis. The interview process helps other employees get to know the candidate, too. Including additional potential coworkers in the interview and selection process helps the new coworkers own and feel some responsibility for the success of the new employee when he or she joins your organization. How to Select Candidates for the Job Interview Your starting point, before scheduling a job interview with a candidate, is to review each candidates cover letter and resume. When faced with 100 to 200 candidates, its important to use tools that separate the great candidates from the many. These will help you select the best candidates for the job interview. They will also help you prepare your list of questions to use to telephone screen candidates and then ask during your onsite or online job interviews. Telephone Screen Candidates Prior to a Job Interview The telephone interview or candidate phone screen allows the employer to determine if the candidates qualific ations, experience, workplace preferences, and salary needs are congruent with the position and your organization. The telephone interview saves employee time and eliminates unlikely candidates. While you will want to develop a customized job interview with customized questions for each position, this step helps narrow down your prospects. How to Prepare for the Job Interview The interview team was selected at your earlier recruiting planning meeting, so the interviewers have had time to prepare. You will want to use the list of qualities, skills, knowledge, and experience you developed for the resume screening process. Use this list to make sure each interviewer understands his or her role in the candidate assessment. Review each interviewers questions, too, to make sure the interview questions selected will obtain the needed information. Illegal Job Interview Questions Ask legal interview questions that illuminate the candidates strengths and weaknesses to determine job fi t. Avoid illegal interview questions and interview practices that could make your company the target of a U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) lawsuit. Hold a Behavioral Job Interview With Each Candidate During the job interview, help the candidate demonstrate his or her knowledge, skills, and experience. Start with small talk and ask several easy questions until the candidate seems relaxed. Then hold a behavioral interview. A behavioral interview is the best tool you have to identify candidates who have the behavioral traits and characteristics that you have selected as necessary for success in a particular job. Additionally, behavioral interview questions ask the candidate to pinpoint specific instances in which a particular behavior was exhibited in the past. In the best behaviorally based interviews, the candidate is unaware of the behavior the interviewer is verifying. This is a much better approach to learning about your candidate then asking the individual to look into a crystal ball and predict probable future behavior. In addition to the candidates verbal responses during the job interview, youll want to notice all of the nonverbal interaction, too. Assess Candidates Following the Job Interview Provide a standard format for each interviewer to use to assess each candidate following the interview. You should have several candidates who youll want to ask back for a second or even third job interview. The information provided, while authoritative, is not guaranteed for accuracy and legality. What Should You Remove from Your Resume

What Should You Remove from Your ResumeWhat Should You Remove from Your ResumeWhether youre new to the job-seeking market or a long time pro, you understand that a professional, well-crafted resume is your foot in the door for any open position. From part time, hourly jobs while in school to career-making positions in the c-suite, the resume is often the only piece of information a prospective employer will have prior to deciding whether to bring you in for that all-important interview. While many blogs, posts, and articles may talk about all the myriad of things you should include on your resume, far fewer devote time to items that are better left on the cutting room floor. With that in mind, here are a few items to subtract, avoid or remove from your resume. The Glamour ShotSo we get it. Youve got a great smile or sparkling platzdeckchen of pearly whites. Maybe your headshot is to die for or your haircut is on point. I mean, its understandableour mom tells us were adorable too. But j ust because you think you scored in the looks department doesnt mean you should be including a photograph in your resume or application package. Adding a photo to your resume is a no-go for multiple reasons. First, despite all of our best intentions, human nature may lend your hiring manager to make assumptions about your character based on a picture before youve even walked into the interview room. In plus-rechnen, including photos can make many uncomfortable as state and federal laws prohibit employers from making hiring decisions based on certain physical characteristics. So to help keep everything on the up and up, ex-nay on the picture-vay.Just a Little T.M.I.Similar to the discomfort an employer may feel over the inclusion of a headshot, adding in factoids such as height, weight, age, ethnicity or religion can make a prospective employer leery about bringing a candidate in for an interview. Whether they select your resume or not, the addition of non-discriminatory information can open the door for hiring liabilities. Keep things professional by including your education, experience, and skills. If you must disclose certain work-place limitations based on religious beliefs, do so after the offer has been made and accepted for everyones peace of mind.Teeny, Tiny White LiesWeve all been in a social situation where weve felt like adding a zero or two to our salary or adding on a few vowels to our official work titles. While this is a grey area at best when attempting to pick up that attractive person at the bar on Friday night, its a solid no-go when it comes to pumping up your resume.Always assume that the hiring manager, recruiter or other representatives of your prospective employer will verify the information on your resume. From educational background to previous titles, keeping this information as accurate as possible is critical to getting and keeping a job offer. Even if your new employer doesnt check up on the facts in your resume, mistruths can crea te hurdles down the road when asked to apply your skills or experience in your new position. That High School Hot Dog Stand JobEveryone has a high school or college job in their past that was mora than acceptable for helping to pay the monthly rent check or that kept you from eating ramen during your school years. While these are perfectly acceptable steps on the career ladder, most likely your experience as a go-kart operator wont be relevant to your new position in office management. Listing every position youve had since high school is not only unnecessary, it can take up valuable resume space for actual applicable experience. Weed out the short term positions and elaborate on your job duties and experiences from jobs in similar fields. Be careful about leaving large job gaps but feel free to otherwise edit away that summer you spent pretending to be a princess for crying five-year-olds.Ditch the ObviousSo youre computer literate, have an English degree and show up to work on time , huh? While we applaud your ability to perform the necessary skills of being a grown adult, obvious traits or characteristics that should be a given for anyone over 16 years old probably shouldnt be taking up valuable resume real estate.Your prospective employer will assume that any candidate applying for an open position meets the minimum thresholds for employability. If your experience or skills arent directly applicable to the job youre applying for, ditch those commonly held traits in lieu of conveying the information that sets you above the field. Your resume should set you unbekannt from the crowd and let your prospective employer know youre the best and brightest, not just another fish in the employment pond.Have an opinion about any of our above exclusions or have another pet peeve when it comes to what to leave out of your resume. Drop us a line and maybe your recommendations will make our next updated list.

How you measure the process, not the results

How you measure the process, leid the resultsHow you measure the process, not the resultsNOTE This is part of a series of personal lessons on life, success, and goal-setting as a way of ending the year on a reflective note. To catch up, you can read lessons below. Most of my life, Ive felt like a loser.I know that sounds harsh, but its true. Ive just never felt good enough. When I played soccer as a chubby little ten-year-old, I welches too slow to score any goals, so my dad (who was the coach) had me play defense. That year, I won the Most Improved Player award. This, in a way, is a pretty good metaphor for my life good, but not great. Solid effort, Jeff. Nice try.In sixth grade, I got my first real taste of greatness by winning the school spelling bee. The winning word was acquiescence, and the eighth grader who lost allegedly cried the entire bus ride home.It was the only time I ever made an eighth grader cry, and to be honest, it felt good. To beat somebody. To win. To not be a lose r.The next year, I didnt practice at all and lost to a sixth grader. The losing word was flourishing. Most of my life has been like this one step forward, one step back. Make a little progress, then regress.Measure the chaseIts not until recently that Ive learned why I do this. I set goals, accomplish them, then slowly start to sabotierung myself.Do you know why we humans do this?Because we dont believe we deserve success. That can mean whatever you want, but the reason we get a little bit of happiness or money or influence and then squander it is because, deep down inside, we dont feel worthy of such things. Now, the reasons we do this are complicated and you should probably talk to a therapist about them (I do), but I want to offer a simple way that you dont have to feel like a loser. Its so easy and yet almost no one does thisWant to feel healthy? Great. You can set a goal to lose 10 pounds or whatever, but dont fixate on the outcome. Research proves that we humans dont love accompl ishing results as much as we love chasing results. So what should you do?Measure the chase, of course. How you achieve something is vastly more important than whether or not you achieve it.For example, you can lose 10 pounds by starving yourself for a week, but that will slow your metabolism down and likely cause you to gain more weight in the long run. Its an unsustainable practice. The same goes for setting a goal of writing a book. If you sprint through NaNoWriMo and complete your first novel but havent developed the daily discipline of working on your writing, its unlikely that you will continue being able to write great stuff. What Im talking about here is habits, practices, and process.Celebrate the processSo, what should you do about that weight loss goal? Measure the thing that youre doing to get healthier. Did you go for a walk today? Eat enough vegetables? Stay under your caloric goal for the day? Then you should feel good about that. What about that writing goal? Did you write your 500 words today? GreatTime to celebrateAfter my second book came out, The In-Between, it didnt do as well as my first two books.I remember sitting on my back porch, texting a mentor of mine, saying how let down I felt, expecting him to commiserate with me. Heres what he saidThere was a time when where you are sitting now seemed out of reach. Rejoice, my friend. RejoiceLook. I dont know much about anything. Ive been a loser my whole life, remember? But I do know thisIf you cannot celebrate the process, you wont be able to enjoy the outcome. So start measuring the process. This article was originally published on Goins,Writer.com
